Previously, when employees were more mobile and available, it was easier to monitor, for example, the condition of railway traction and rolling stock. But when these experts suddenly had to stay home, the trains did not stop. They must continue to run safely.

As a result, efficient and safe infrastructure management was possible remotely and with the participation of a much smaller number of employees using EAM solutions.

The traditional work of a field technician, who had a telephone and possibly a camera or a camera at his disposal during service works, often resulted in the fact that, due to the inability to quickly determine the cause of the failure, it was cheaper and easier to replace a given part than to repair it. 

Modern EAM tools can change that. At the same time, they are a response to the emerging – not only in connection with the pandemic – shortages of top-class specialists.

This allows a remote product expert to look at the hardware and rotate it to manipulate the image to get more information. It can also annotate the image with instructions and specification details instantly. This enriched set is then displayed again on the device of the field worker.

What is especially important, data analysis takes place constantly, online, thanks to which potential problems can be detected very quickly.

To implement this type of solution, you first need to invest in the installation of a large number of sensors. But over time, the company saves, for example, by avoiding downtime related to breakdowns. It is particularly useful in huge energy and transport companies, for which each stoppage results in multi-million losses – emphasizes Jarosław Łukasiewicz.

In railway undertakings, for example, the condition of wheels and brakes is checked in this way. On the other hand, the systems used in Airbus collect, among others, sensor information from engines and online analysis of what is happening with the devices. On this basis, they provide for possible maintenance or repair inspections, which may determine human life – adds the CEO of Vetasi.

The future of EAM systems?

Augmented reality and remote servicing of equipment are the answer not only to the challenges related to the pandemic but also, for example, to problems related to the lack of top-class specialists. This is especially important for companies that, for example, have many branches, but operate a highly dispersed infrastructure.

Jarosław Łukasiewicz emphasizes that in Poland more and more enterprises are starting to be interested in modern EAM solutions, and their capabilities are eagerly used by start-ups.
